DAY TRIP TO HUNTING ISLAND STATE PARK SC

About 70 miles from Edisto is another barrier island named Hunting Island. It has a state park and beautiful beach similar to Edisto.
The lighthouse on the island was built in the 1800's and is constructed of cast iron sections to enable the lighthouse to be disassembled and relocated if necessary due to shore erosion .

In an effort to arrange the palm trees for a more photographic picture, I moved a few.

PICCOLO SPOLETO FESTIVAL

The festival is held in Charleston during the last two weeks in May. It is a combination of arts, music and theatre.

We browsed through the art displays at Marion Square.

Tearooms are setup by the various churches around the square and were most enjoyable.

At the tearoom we had homemade crab soup, shrimp salad and ham biscuit. Seafood and pasta were sampled on the trip back to Edisto. That sign is real and the installer is still waiting for his payment!

LOGGERHEAD TURTLE PROJECT

Along the South Carolina coast the residents are requested
to turn off any coastal lights from May to October.
This action will help the threatened Logger Head
turtle navigate to it's nesting areas and hopefully
increase both the production and survival rate
for this species.
On two mornings we joined a group of volunteers that
walk the local beach in the early morning (5am) to
survey the success of this project. With a wake up
call from Randy, we were on the road.
The search is on.First order of the day was to upright a large horse shoe
crab that was over turned on the beach. It was rewarding to see it safely on its way.
These are the tracks of a Loggerhead turtle.
When located the site is secured and recorded by the
Park Rangers.
At sunrise the mission is accomplished.
A GREAT START TO A FEEL GOOD DAY

GIVHANS FERRY STATE PARK SC

The park is located 130km from Edisto Island and 50 km north of
Charleston. It's located of the bluffs of the Edisto River which is the
longest free flowing blackwater river on the continent.
This is the 3km trail that travels along the river bank.
The river is a busy fishing/rafting site and up to the nineteen
hundreds this location provided ferry service to the
Charleston area.

This little four foot garter snake was located at the washroom
entrance. This was my favorite washroom as it was never busy.

We spent two days in the park with hopes of touring Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island but our time was short and the traffic long due the holiday weekend.

BOTANY BAY BEACH

Botany Bay Beach is located on the Botany Bay Plantation.
It is without doubt the most magical beach I have ever
visited. My words and pictures will try to capture the spirit of
this beach.
